Senior Food Services

Senior Food Services provides nutritious home delivered meals to low-income homebound elderly and disabled people in the greater New Haven area. In addition to addressing the nutritional needs of the homebound elderly and disabled, LifeBridge also operates 20 senior community cafes in senior centers and subsidized housing projects. Our “Senior Dine” program provides a progressive alternative to dining at traditional congregate cafes by offering subsidized meals at local area restaurants.

MEALS ON WHEELS

The Meals on Wheels program addresses the nutritional needs of the homebound elderly and disabled, and delivers nutritious meals to approximately 900 individuals residing in the greater New Haven area. A variety of therapeutic meals including chopped and pureed are available to satisfy specific dietary requirements. Deliveries are made Monday through Friday and weekend meals are provided as needed. Some clients qualify for financial assistance. Full fee service is also available for non-qualifying clients.

MEALS ON WHEELS FAQ

Who is eligible to receive Meals On Wheels?
Anyone who is at least 60 years of age, homebound, residing in the Greater New Haven area and has difficulty procuring and/or preparing meals for themselves is eligible to receive meals.

How do I enroll in the program?
Referrals to the program may be made by the individual themselves or by family, friends, neighbors or a medical or social professional. Referrals are taken over the phone by calling our office at 203-752-9919 Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 4:00pm. You will be asked a series of questions regarding the candidate’s individual circumstances and dietary needs. Please have available the candidate’s date of birth, the last four digits of their social security number, the name of their primary physician and a ballpark monthly income. The process takes about five minutes.

What will I receive?
We will deliver up to two meals per day – a hot dinner and a cold supper. All meals include bread, butter and a dessert and meet one third of the recommended daily allowance for good health. Our menus are planned and overseen by a registered dietician. Our menu is published every Monday in the New Haven Register Local Section.

Are special diets available?
Yes, a wide variety of special diets are available as prescribed by the recipient’s physician. These diets include: Regular (low sodium, low fat and low cholesterol; Diabetic 1800 ada; Bland; Low Residue; Modified texture (chopped, pureed); Renal and Allergy specific. We are unable to accommodate personal food preferences.

What time will I receive my meals?
Deliveries are made between the hours of 9am and 2:00pm Monday through Friday and delivery time depends on where the address falls within the delivery route. The meal recipient must be in the home to receive the meals. Meals will never be left in coolers or on doorsteps. Meals for weekend consumption may be provided to recipients at high nutritional risk and will be pre-delivered on Thursday or Friday.

What do the meals cost?
The cost of meals depends on a recipient’s individual circumstances. Meals may be purchased on a fee for services basis. Subsidized meals are provided as available funding permits.

SENIOR DINE PROGRAM

This program offers an alternative to congregate dining at the senior community “cafes” at area senior centers and housing communities by offering meals at local area restaurants on specific days during the week with a fixed menu of 9-10 entrées. Seniors benefit from a varied menu in a social setting that lifts their spirits as well as nurtures their bodies. This program is funded in part by the Area Agency of South Central CT in partnership with LifeBridge. To be eligible for these programs, seniors must be 60 years or older and a resident of the Greater New Haven area.
